Hidden Blessings
In the countryside on a quiet night
A group of shepherds guard their sleeping sheep,
But routine quickly flees as the angels sing,
Announcing news that is too good to keep.
There is a little town of no account,
So small it isn't on the maps,
But in a stable there in a feeding trough
Our very Maker, as a baby, lies sleeping wrapped.
So the shepherds leave their nightly task
To follow up this most amazing news,
And they find the babe as the angels said.
Their hearts rejoice to know God's promise has finally come true.
They found hidden blessings bring the sweetest of joys
In the midst of suff'ring and through all of life's noise.
Their hearts were open and they couldn't help but see
The depth of God's passion in His hidden blessings.
In a seaside town some fishermen
are returning with their empty nets,
When a landsman says, "Go out again.
You just haven't found the right spot yet."
And the men obey and cast their nets
Expecting just the same results as before,
But the One who made the seas knows where to fish,
So their overloaded nets barely make it to shore.
When they realize who their helper is
Their elation turns to fear and shame,
But the Perfect One lifts their downcast heads
And once their eyes meet his they're never the same.
For they found hidden blessings bring the sweetest of joys
In the midst of suff'ring and through all of life's noise.
Their hearts were open and they couldn't help but see
The depth of God's passion in His hidden blessings.
On the outskirts of the city of God's peace
Three crosses mar the festive atmosphere.
On the center cross hangs the Son of God
His crime: telling people there is nothing to fear.
For He came to set every captive free,
No matter how their prison bars take form.
But the ruling ones of society
Just aren't ready for God to open up all those doors.
So they take this one who was born for love
And they kill him on the cruel cross.
But their intentions fail and he lives again
Bringing freedom at last to the weary children of God.
For He knew hidden blessings bring the sweetest of joys
And through His suff'ring we have cause to rejoice.
Jesus was broken so that we'd finally see,
Through the depth's of his Passion, God's hidden blessings.
In little towns and cities great
We're still lookin' for the happiness key,
While life slips away, smothered by the things
That people think will help them to finally be free.
We're so busy in our pursuit of joy
That we miss her when she gently woos
Through the little things of the everyday,
So our rabid pace will cause us to eventually lose.
We must slow down a bit,
Try to give and not grab,
Then we'll find bringing joy to others
Means there's more joy to be had.
For hidden blessings bring the sweetest of joys
In the midst of suff'ring and through all of life's noise.
If our hearts are open how can we help but see
The depth of God's passion in His hidden blessings.
May our hearts be open, so that we finally see
The depths of God's passion in each hidden blessing.
